Max's Belgian Beer Fest 2020
Friday February 14. Drove to Jason and Lisa's house where I met Jason, Chuck (author of
the Belgian Beer Specialist website), and Brian
(master brewer of Stillwater Artisanal Ales). Lisa was working
and would meet us downtown later. We Ubered to Fells Point and checked out the
line at Max's. At 8:10 there were only 2 people, and they hadn't arrived until around 8:00 (there have been years
when people have gotten in line as early as 6:00). We then went next door to
Jimmy's for breakfast.

Me, Jason, Chuck, and Brian. |
Several members of the
Cross Street Irregulars (CSI) homebrew club eventually joined us (they
do an annual pre-festival breakfast).
The four of us went to Max's before the other folks because Brian was to give a presentation at 9:00 and they let
the other three us go in with him. Brian went upstairs to do his thing while
Chuck, Jason, and I hung out downstairs for two hours. We had no access to beer until the festival began at 11:00, but at least we
didn't have to wait outside in the cold, plus we were able to save a large table in the front room for the roughly 10 other folks who would be
joining us. Here are the photos I took while the place was still mostly empty.
Another advantage of getting in early was that we got our first beer orders in right when the festival started, before the horde came in.
Eventually we were joined by the rest of our group, many of who had attended an RaR Brewing
event at 10:00. There were also several CSI folks in the middle room. And so the drinking commenced. We all ordered and shared beers
for several hours. Here are the beers I sampled, with my usual disclaimer of not guaranteeing accuracy:

Chuck, Jason, and I walked to Ale Mary's sometime between 4 and 5 PM. They drank a couple of Orvals.
I was too beered out to drink more.
Then we walked to Ministry of Brewing, which had just opened a
few weeks earlier. It's located in the former St. Michaels Church. Lisa was there when we arrived. Again,
I was too beered out to drink so I can't tell you how good the beer was. I did get some photos though.
Lisa drove us to Hudson Street Stackhouse, where we all
got food and the three of them got beer.
Then we all returned to Jason and Lisa's house, where I hadn't planned on drinking but they opened several
great beers so I was compelled to join them. There could have been more than the ones listed but I
don't remember.
- Lindemans Cuvée Lambikstoemper 2019
- Sierra Nevada Barrel Aged Torpedo
- 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Golden Blend (excellent; my favorite beer of the day)
- Westvleteren 12
We partied until after 1:00 AM. What a great day.
Saturday February 15. I slept for only two hours, which is not uncommon for me. I lay on the couch
trying unsuccessfully to get back to sleep. Finally I left shortly before 5:30. At home I worked on this
web page and emptied my system of the large amounts of food I'd consumed the previous day.
At 9:00 my friend
Amanda picked me up and we went to Max's for the 10th annual Stillwater tasting in the upstairs bar.
Brian was celebrating the 10th anniversary of releasing unique craft brews. His first beer,
Stateside Saison, was released in February 2010. We sat with friends and sampled:

Amanda and I left around 5:30. On the way to the car we stopped at Bertha's
just to look around.
I don't remember much after that. Obviously Amanda took good care of me, which is how I survived to write this.
Monday February 17. After taking Sunday off I was ready to go back for Sour Monday. I drove to my friend
Dominic's and he drove us up there. It was quite crowded when we arrived around noon.
We ran into several friends. Most of the sours on tap
were made in the U.S. There were also plenty of Belgian bottles. We hung out in the

By 3:00 we'd sampled enough. And so ended yet another great Max's Belgian Beer Fest.
