CRABS Baltimore pub crawl 2023
Saturday April 1
With several new breweries opening since our
2018 Light Rail crawl,
we decided to do it again. The threat of rain and wind deterred some people, but 8 of us braved
the weather to visit several breweries.
We rode the Light Rail to the Ravens stadium, arriving shortly before noon, except Jason,
who had taken an earlier train. The remaining 7 of us walked to
Pigtown and met Jason at
Wico Street Beer Company,
which had just opened 4½ months earlier. We tried many beers between us; the
ones I tried were:
- User Settings (good fruited sour IPA with marionberries)
- Power of the Pomace (pretty good hazy DIPA) (can)
- Game Over (phenolic 12.6% ABV imperial stout)
By the time we left, the weather had gone from cloudy and a bit rainy to mostly sunny.
We walked to
Suspended Brewing, which opened at the end of 2017
and we had visited on our
2018 crawl.
We tried just about every beer they had. I sampled:
- Ivory Shoulders (pretty good Belgian abbey ale)
- Pomegranates in Cairo (decent fruited hibiscus ale)
- Helping Hands (marginal saison)
- Kintsugi (pretty good IPA)
- Leda (great barrel-aged sour) (bottle)
- Watercolor Dreams (quite good farmhouse ale) (bottle)
- Wesley (good hefeweizen)
- Double Black Pearl (good imperial breakfast stout with cinnamon and vanilla)
- Sunrise in Cairo (decent red ale with hibiscus)
Next we walked to Pickett Brewing, which opened
on August 31, 2022. We ran into a couple of beer enthusiast friends. I sampled:
- Big Thirsty (pretty good hazy DIPA)
- Entourage Effect (good NEIPA)
- Send it Naked (pretty good farmhouse ale)
- Bigger Garage (pretty good hazy DIPA)
- Crooked Tree (fairly good hazy DIPA)
We walked back to the Light Rail...
... and rode up to the Woodberry stop. A stone's throw from
there is Pariah Brewing, which opened on
January 21, 2022. It's located where Union Brewing used to be. I tried:
- I Got 6 on it (pretty good hazy DIPA)
- Catch Me Coastin' (pretty good IPA)
- All the Bootleg Snacks (quite good 11.1% ABV stout with condensed milk, vanilla, coconut, chocolate, and cinnamon)
- Silence of the Bock (pretty good doppelbock)
- My Cat from Helles (decent helles)
- Proper ESB (decent)
Next we walked to an assembly of independently owned businesses called
Union Collective. Our destination was a
brewery but Jason, Gordon, Chris H., Christa, and I decided to visit
Baltimore Spirits Company first.
It went into business in 2014, started distilling in 2017, and has been at the
Union Collective since 2018. It has a tasting room called the
Cocktail Gallery.
We tried 8 different spirits.
Then we met Chris A. and Ed at Union Craft Brewing
(Joe had gone home). Gordon kept wandering off, and we issued a silver alert.
Anyway, I sampled:
- Skipjack (pilsner)
- Blackwing (black lager)
- Divine (IPA)
When we left it had started raining again. We walked to
Waverly Brewing and the only beer I tried was:
- Simcoeexistence (fairly good IPA)
Before leaving we issued another silver alert for Gordon. Then we got back on the Light Rail,
went to the Cultural Center stop, and arrived at
Wet City Brewing a little after 8:00. The place
had a nice vibe. I tried:
- Hello (hazy IPA)
- Dots and Squiggles (9% ABV barrel-aged sour)
- Dunkel-ish
- Boom Bap (stout)
- NZ Dry-Hopped Pilsner-ish
Our last brewery of the day was
The Brewer's Art. We tried all 6 of their drafts:
- Resurrection (abbey brown)
- Beazly (good golden ale)
- Greep Peppercorn Tripel (good)
- Best Foot Forward (best bitter)
- Fortress of Solitude (pale ale)
- Charm City Cherry (brown ale with sour cherries)
It was chilly and windy as we headed back to the Light Rail. We all got off at
Cromwell Station. Gordon, Ed, and Jason went home, while Chris H., Christa, Chris A., and I
went to Chris A.'s. We'd planned on drinking beer (not that we're alcoholics or anything) but
first we wanted some food. Having food delivered would have taken close to an hour, so
we went to Honey Bee Diner. After that we were too
tired to drink, so Chris H. and Christa went home and I crashed at Chris A.'s.
It was a fun day, with 8 breweries, a distillery, and lots of beers.
